Principal's Corner

About Dr. Nelson

Dr. Julia S. Nelson is a native of Dallas County. She grew up in Theodore, Alabama. Dr. Nelson attended Burroughs Elementary School and St. Elmo High School. In 1993, Dr. Nelson received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and 1995; she received her Masters of Education from the University of South Alabama. Dr. Nelson also completed her Educational Specialist Degree from the University of South Alabama in 2000. In 2004, Dr. Nelson received her Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University.

Prior to entering the field of education, Dr. Nelson worked as a bookkeeper, real estate agent, and a real estate broker. She owned her own real estate company, Nelson Realty for a brief time.

Burroughs Elementary has met AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) each year under Dr. Nelson’s leadership. In 2007, Burroughs Elementary School was recognized as one out of nine schools in the state of Alabama and one out of four schools in Mobile County to receive the prestigious Torchbearer award. The Torchbearer award is given to schools whose students are top performing students. Burroughs met the standards, exceeded the standards and closed the gap. Dr. Nelson was invited to Montgomery on two occasions. First to receive recognition and funds in the amount of $70,000.00. Second, to have dinner and accept recognition of funds in the amount of $15,000.00. Dr. Julia S. Nelson is a proud servant in her school, church and community. Most days Monday through Friday, she is in her school from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. On Friday night, you find her at the Theodore High School football games where her youngest son, Ramon Nelson is a member of the coaching team. On most Saturday mornings, you will find her at one of community parks, where her grandsons and most of her Burroughs' students play football. On Sundays, you will find her at her church beginning at 9:00 a.m. teaching Sunday school and presenting the Seed Program (a program designed to build Christian disciples). On the first and third Sunday, you will find her praising God in the mass choir at her church.

Dr. Julia S. Nelson is the daughter of the deceased Tuson and Henretter Sullivan. She is the youngest of nine children. Dr. Nelson credits her awesome work ethics to her mother. She is the proud wife of Henry L. Nelson and three sons, Pedro, Jamaal and Ramon Nelson. She is the busy grandmother of ten wonderful grandchildren.
